At Logan University, our quality education is driven by faculty members who bring passion, expertise and real-world experience to their teaching. Among these educators is Devon Ackroyd, DC, MS (’19), DACBSP, Cert. MDT, an assistant professor for Logan’s Doctor of Chiropractic program known for his impressive background in sports chiropractic.
While sports remain a cornerstone of his career, Dr. Ackroyd has found fulfillment in the classroom, teaching courses such as Clinical Reasoning III and Practice Procedures. These courses equip students with the clinical skills and insights they’ll need for success in practice.
In Clinical Reasoning III, Dr. Ackroyd guides students through complex cases where symptoms may mimic musculoskeletal pain but could signal conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory or abdominal issues.
“My goal is to ensure students recognize when a condition falls outside the chiropractic scope,” Dr. Ackroyd explained. “This is essential for safe and effective practice.”
In Practice Procedures, students explore different approaches to chiropractic care. Through guest lectures and interactive discussions, students gain valuable insights into different practice styles, from high-volume clinics to rehabilitation-focused settings.
“I bring in guest speakers to expose students to real-world perspectives,” he said. “They hear about the successes, challenges and even missteps. They can also ask questions which helps them feel more prepared for their own journeys.”
Dr. Ackroyd’s teaching philosophy is deeply informed by his years of experience in private practice and his role as a faculty clinician at the Montgomery Health Center. By weaving real-world scenarios into classroom discussions, he makes the material more relatable and engaging for students.
Balancing his role as an educator with his work in private practice requires dedication, but Dr. Ackroyd says it’s a rewarding challenge.
“Teaching keeps you sharp,” he said. “To teach effectively, you must stay on top of current research and continuously refine your knowledge. It’s also a way to give back to the profession that has given me so much.”
For Dr. Ackroyd, the most fulfilling part of teaching is seeing his students grow and succeed.
“Watching students graduate and thrive as professionals is incredibly rewarding,” he said. “It’s exciting to reconnect with them later as colleagues and see how far they’ve come.”
With experience working with elite teams like the United States women’s national ice hockey team and the United States Archery Team, Dr. Ackroyd dreams of one day going to the Olympics to work with a team on the world stage.
In the meantime, he remains committed to staying at the forefront of chiropractic care by integrating the latest research into his teaching and inspiring Logan students to reach their full potential.
